Ukraine Tensions Reignite Russian-Turkish Battle over Waterway

Russia is starting to expand its marine existence in the Black Sea. And The Sunday Times newspaper, referring to British naval sources, said Britain is also expanding two battleships to add NATO’s presence. As tensions over Ukraine grow.

The approach to the Black Sea is over Turkey’s Bosphorus. and Dardanelles waterways which are guarded by the 1936 Montreux Convention.

The retired Turkish Ambassador Mithat Rende, a maritime law analyst, said the recent problems underlines the treaty’s importance.

Rende said that Marine powers, which are not riparian states, have a finite approach to the Black Sea. “Every country can keep a finite amount of thirty thousand quantities in the Black Sea and for a duration of only 21 days.

So, it is apparently fascinating for some countries, like the United States, to have a difference to Montreux.”

Previous this month, news reports said Russian President Vladimir Putin pressed his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to ensure NATO fully gave up with the Montreux Convention.

Huseyin Bagci of the Foreign Policy Institute in Ankara said Moscow sees the meeting as key to Russian Black Sea authority.

Bagci explains “Due to this Black Sea is at the same time a Russian sea.  Because the Russian navy is powerful,” Bagci said. “And the American battleships are defined there. And it is beneficial for Russia to have Montreux.”

But the future of the 80-year-old generation could be in question. A Turkish financial firm acclaimed the advantages of the Istanbul canal. That would run similarity with the Bosphorus, contributing a faster and safer way for ships. The canal — whose development is due to opening in the coming months — is creating interest in Moscow.

Erdogan declares this month the canal is not protected by Montreux. Opening the door to capability boundless use by any nation’s warships.

Turkey-Russia relations investigator Zaur Gasimov at Bonn University said consideration over Montreux gives Ankara an advantage over Moscow.

“The Montreux compromise and how Turkey handles it. That also produces a new hope for Ankara to advertise its concern in its communication with Russia,” Gasimov said. “It  gives certain advantages for Ankara to control the situation, the passage around the Black Sea region and even also to deepen the cooperation with the United States.”But Erdogan’s plan is facing pushback.
